MAURITS VAN CAMP SYMPOSIUM

Date: April 19- 21, 2026
Venue: Van der Valk Hotel & Business Center, Luitenant Lippenslaan 66, 2140 Antwerp, Belgium
Plant tours: UMICORE Hoboken & Aurubis Beerse

Program

Maurits Van Camp, a pioneering figure in metallurgical recycling, has passed away, leaving a lasting legacy. As the former Director of Research & Innovation at Umicore Precious Metals Recycling in Hoboken, Belgium, he played a pivotal role in advancing European recycling practices. Umicore, under Maurits’s research leadership, became a global leader in sustainable materials science, chemistry, and metallurgy, with a strong focus on recycling and the circular economy. His contributions were recognized with the Fray International Sustainability Award at SIPS 2011 and James Douglas medal from AIME in 2021.

Beyond technological advancements, Maurits was a visionary who fostered strong collaborations between academia and industry in a field of digitalisation of metallurgy. Since 1995, he has worked closely with academics to build industrially-backed research in pyrometallurgical recycling with a goal to produce predictive computational tools based on advanced thermodynamics. This collaborative approach has been instrumental in supporting the development and optimisation of new complex process technologies. Maurits’s pioneering work has set a new standard for the industry, inspiring other companies to adopt more efficient and environmentally friendly recycling practices. His legacy will continue to shape the future of metallurgical recycling in Europe and beyond.

About the Expert Committees

The technical-scientific work of the GDMB is carried out in its specialist committees. Their members meet regularly to discuss the latest technical and scientific findings in their fields. In addition to a lecture program, topic-related plant tours round off the meetings. The current and future work of the technical committees is determined in internal meetings. Working groups are formed at short notice to deal with individual problems. Their number and focus are variable and are adapted to current requirements.

AKJM-Heads: Dipl.-Ing. Lukas Manthey, Niklas Hartung (Clausthal), Jasmin Groß (Aachen), Patrick Reimann (Freiberg)

The Young Members Working Group (AKJM) aims to integrate younger GDMB members (young engineers and students) more strongly into the society’s activities and to involve them in its tasks. In addition, the aim is to increase the participation of young members in events organized by the specialist committees and district groups. The AKJM runs its own training seminars. The working group is represented by contact persons at many universities. The GDMB wants to present its activities primarily to students and young engineers. In addition, we want to promote the engineering profession. Company visits are intended to provide a realistic insight into the diverse activities of geologists, mining engineers, processors, metallurgists and related professions. Short presentations present career prospects and opportunities. Young and experienced colleagues talk about their experiences and give tips for choosing a career and a successful career. Specialist excursions and seminars also provide the opportunity to make personal contacts in order to clarify further questions.
