The ever increasing use of special and precious metals in industry and in the consumer sector has led to these metals having great importance in terms of

• raw material deposits and their extraction,
  
• refining processes and extreme purity,
  
• areas of application and
  
• recycling of materials.
  

In addition to the classical precious metals and refractory metals, the rare earth and semiconductor metals and their compounds increasingly used in electronics, optics and regenerative energy generation are more and more in focus.

The Special Metals Specialist Committee discusses the individual current themes and locates tasks in the various fields of production and recycling during the annual two-day specialist committee meetings. These offer the participating members and guests an excellent opportunity for exchange of opinions and the chance to inform themselves about the latest technology and current research projects. For a better understanding of the area of industry in question here, every event offers the chance to visit the premises of the firms in the locality, who are always connected with the content of the lecture programme.

The next meeting of the Special Metals Specialist Committee is from 23rd to 24th October 2013 in Reutte (Austria).
