The Deposits Specialist Committee combines among its members the expertise from universities, authorities and the industry in the field of deposit research and exploration of mineral raw materials. Its most important task is to provide a network for the exchange of the available deposit-related know-how from universities and the industry.

The specialist committee not only establishes contacts between members with very different backgrounds in terms of subject and qualification; it also arranges contacts to partners in industry and public administration. The Deposits Specialist Committee has an explicitly international orientation and wants to encourage young GDMB members to become active in the field of exploration and extraction of mineral raw materials at home and abroad. Its tasks also include the identification of new and practice-related research topics.

There are close contacts to the Forschungskollegium Lagerstätten e.V. (FKL) (Deposit Research Association) as well as to the Deposit Research Specialist Committee of the German Mineralogical Society (DMG). Committee meetings are held at least once a year and mostly in combination with conferences, whereby it has become a fixed annual tradition to meet at the same time as the status seminar on raw materials research of the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) in Hannover.

At irregular intervals, the specialist committee organizes excursions to deposits of mineral raw materials.
